Learner journeys

From Saturday tutoring to the careers that follow.

FLY learners start in Grades 8 to 12 at our Gugulethu and Alexandra centres. The path runs from tutoring to bursary to university to career, and often back to FLY as a volunteer tutor. These are five of those journeys, published with each learner's consent.

FLY played a pivotal role in shaping both my academic and professional journey. Beyond Mathematics and Life Skills tutoring, FLY connected me to a network of young Black professionals whose mentorship and example inspired me to pursue higher education and envision a future in the corporate world.

I earned a Bachelor of Social Science in Psychology and Sociology and a BCom Honours in Information Systems at the University of Cape Town, then a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Analysis at Rhodes University. Today, as a Business Analyst at one of South Africa's leading insurers, I can say FLY was a cornerstone of my success.

FLY is the programme that had the most meaningful impact in my life. In 2019 we attended an open day at Stellenbosch University, my first time learning it existed. That inspired me to apply, and two years later I was enrolled.

I graduated with a BCom in Management Science in December 2025 and am now completing my BCom Honours in Logistics Management. FLY helped with application fees and academic advice throughout my undergraduate career, and gave me a photographer and graduation support that made the day memorable. They inspired me to give back to students from a similar background.

My educational journey has grown into a life of leadership, research, and service. As a Master's candidate in Development Economics at the University of the Western Cape, my research focuses on improving educational outcomes in South Africa.

Beyond my studies, I mentor students, provide academic support, and invest in the development of young people. Educational opportunities like these create lasting impact in communities.

I completed a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting at the University of the Western Cape, then joined Standard Bank as a graduate trainee. I was given permanent employment as a Credit Analyst, which is my current role.
